Our Ecclesiastes has Solomon jumping into the ways of the world in his quest for fulfillment, after pleasing himself, he turns to wine, although Solomon is careful to tell us he didn’t become an alcoholic, it sounds like he was just trying wine out, but needless to say, He didn’t get any higher level of enlightenment from wine either:
Ecc 2:3a After much thought, I decided to cheer myself with wine.
From wine Solomon turns to ignorance, as the saying goes, ignorance is bliss. After all, the most sheltered and uneducated people usually seem to be the most jolly, so Solomon goes that route as we glean in the second half of today’s verse
Ecc 2:3b And while still seeking wisdom, I clutched at foolishness. In this way, I tried to experience the only happiness most people find during their brief life in this world.
Nothing doing there either! King Solomon tries both wine and foolishness today, and as the U2 song sings “I still haven’t found what I’ve been looking for”
All of these dreams he chases and Solomon still comes up empty…Christ is the only way, as we will learn towards the end of The Book Of Ecclesiastes!
