Today’s world is seemingly full of rebellions, it has become fashionable to speak out against authority, the adage silence is consent is often slung around in various political circles. With that in mind, today’s Word implores us to obey authorities, whether it is here on earth or in the heavens above:
Ecc 8:2 I say: Keep the king’s command, because of God’s oath to him.
Ecc 8:3 Be not hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand in an evil cause, for he does whatever he pleases.
Ecc 8:4 For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, “What are you doing?”
In the New Testament we also have Paul who tells us to submit to governing authorities Rom 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
Rom 13:2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
The reality here is that God has put those people in power there according to His will, and Biblically we are to respect governing authorities as long as it doesn’t make us wayward in following Jesus, Christ tells us this in His discourse the Pharisees when He says render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
So circling back to the original verse, we are to keep the King’s commands because God put them there, the world may try and woo us into some kind of fashionable rebellion, but the Bible instructs us to listen to our leaders and His divine authority.
