Some eternal assurances are found in our Psalms today:
Psa 16:5 LORD, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine.
Psa 16:6 The land you have given me is a pleasant land. What a wonderful inheritance!
The focus of today’s text is inheritance, that word is used twice in our Psalms and looking at that through a biblical framework, we as followers of Jesus will inherit the kingdom of heaven.
The verses today assure us that God will guard our inheritance too. Comparing that with an earthly inheritance, like land or money or cars that can be passed down to us from our parents when they die in a will, those things can be taken away, we can lose them in a fire, or have the IRS seize them, or lose them in a court case to another relative…those inheritances that we seemingly like to put all of our focus on, can be taken away.
Meanwhile, The Kingdom of Heaven, that Christ has assured us through His death and resurrection, cannot be taken away. As The Psalms say, it is a wonderful inheritance, that is guarded by God. Nothing can come between God and His children, which is a wonderful reassurance that we have when we are in the Lord. Our earthly inheritances can be taken from us, but God’s Kingdom cannot be.
