Great Word once again in our Psalms that shows that David emerges victorious, but it wouldn’t have happened without God!
Psa 18:34 He trains my hands for battle, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
Unpacking that, we see that David states; God equips my hands for the battles, so that with the strength God has given me, I can bend a bow of bronze or equip myself with the defenses so I can protect myself.
The Psalmist is saying, sure – I can lift up weapons and protect myself, but that wouldn’t have happened unless God first trained my hands so I was able to protect myself, putting the onus on God.
So God is the constant here, with God, David is able to win the battle, but without God, David would have lost the battle.
From a New Covenant point of view, with Christ we are able to win the battle againt sin. We are dead in sin, but redeemed through Christ. Without Christ, we are on our own, and that is a hopeless state with a one way ticket down below!
