Pro 24:17  Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall

Some sage advice in our Proverbs today that warns us against celebrating when our enemies get into trouble,

Pro 24:17  Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall; don’t be happy when they stumble.

This can certainly be a tempting trap to fall into.  Our enemies gloat and mock us, so why wouldn’t we want to gloat and mock them when they finally “step in it”?

Well for one, we shouldn’t do that because Christ specifically forbids it…He says we are to pray for our enemies and those who persecute us, and then today’s Proverb goes onto say that if we spike the football when our enemies stumble, we will arouse God’s wrath from them to us:

Pro 24:18  For the LORD will be displeased with you and will turn his anger away from them.

Being on the wrong side of God’s anger is a place that no one wants to be, this happened with David when David sinned with Bathsheba, David own son tried to have David murdered and God took the son between David and Bathsheba…hard to think of a darker place to be than when God is angry with us.  So the moral of today’s Proverb; as tempting as it might be to rejoice when our enemy stumbles…don’t because Christ forbids it, and God tells us He will turn his anger from our enemy onto us!
