It is God and God alone, who calls the shots: 

Pro 16:9  We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.

So much of our lives revolves around planning our lives, we save for a 401K, or dedicate our days to making money, so yes we can certainly make plans as the verse says, but what actually happens is decided by God, as the first says “the Lord determines our steps” reminding us that God has the final say, man may think and dream, but what becomes of us is determined by God, an example of this is death – or when God decides to call us; we can scrimp and save and have enough money in the bank to last us into the next millennium, but what happens if we die tomorrow?  On the other hand, we can live recklessly as if there were no tomorrow and end up living to the ripe old age of 90….the bottom line is we do not determine our destiny, as the Word says – God determines our steps, which should give us a low view of ourselves and a high view of God.
